All three legends on the Great Seal of the United States are adaptations of verses attributed to the Roman poet Virgil—reflecting Virgil’s status as the unofficial “poet laureate” of the American Founding. This article examines how Americans employed Virgil’s poetry during the debates over the United States Constitution.
